SMS is an independently operated partnership by Mr. Periyasamy Dhandappa Gounder, who started his manufacturing business in 1997 with two machines, and has grown the company to now have over 50 machines within a very short amount of time!

SMS Gears was established in 2020 by Mathivanan Periyasamy with the intention of being able to compete against some of the major gearbox manufacturers by producing outstanding quality gearboxes. We provide expert solutions for the manufacture of a variety of types of gearboxes for drilling and mining equipment, as well as customized gearboxes according to our clients specifications. Currently, we offer an extensive selection of over 20 specialized design types and are a preferred supplier of unique solutions that meet our customers needs. Unlike the majority of manufacturers, who concentrate on producing in volume, SMS focuses on customer satisfaction. As a result, we produce high-quality products that perform with power, quiet operation, and high efficiency, while maintaining effective precision engineering processes.

SMS Alloys

SMS Alloys was formed in 2022, and is producing Heavy Duty WCB and Alloys type steel. Examples of these produce are Gearbox Housings, Valves, Impellers, Pulleys, etc.... Presently SMS Alloys is the only manufacturer in India that provides complete casting and machining capabilities for the production of drilling/mining spare parts and accessories. Clients of SMS Alloys include SMS Gears, Epiroc, PRD Rigs, and Metadrill.

Our History

1997- The business originally focused on producing spare parts and accessories for rig drilling machinery in Tiruchengode. The company was formed under the senior staff of company founder Periyasamy Dhadappa Gounder.
2001- The Sri Murugan Equipment Company was incorporated with 10,000 sq.ft. of space in the well-known coimbatore industrial area.
2005- The company was able to produce 2000 rotary head gearboxes each year for drilling machines using its unique manufacturing process.
2012- The company has added additional products to its list of PTO gearboxes and winch gearboxes used in tractors and trucks.
2014- The initial Auto rod changer unit was produced by SMS and they were sold in India, with 200 total sold.
2015- The manufacturing capacity of SMS has increased from 10,000 sq. ft. To 50,000 sq. ft. With the Custom Testing Facility for their gearboxes, this makes them among the largest manufacturers of Gearboxes and accessories for the drilling industry in India
2016- This is the first time SMS has completed the design and manufacture of Rotary Head Gearbox products for the Mining, RC Drilling and Core drilling industry.

Facilities

Infrastructure- The heart of Coimbatore is the place where SMS Gears is located. SMS Gears utilizes a very high-tech production setup and is supported by some very talented young engineers. Our machining shop occupies 100,000 sq. ft. of space with a total building area of 60,000 sq. ft.
R&D & Testing Facility- Within SMS Gears we have an in-house R&D & Testing facility exclusively devoted to researching and testing materials with the aim of achieving technical superiority & excellence. By creating our own R&D & Testing facilities, we are able to exercise total control over our own products in terms of quality and productivity.
Machine Shop & Casting- At SMS Gears, we are proud to say that approximately 80% of all components we sell are manufactured internally, which includes steel castings produced at our subsidiary SMS Alloys foundry. Internally manufacturing components ensures that SMS Gears will provide all their customers with a quality product and will be on time to deliver Gear Boxes.
Manufacturing Facilities- The manufacturing facility of SMS Gears has an advanced state of the art manufacturing process using all of the machineries used for Gear Hobbing, CNC Inner Diameter Grinding, Conventional Outer Diameter Grinding, Balancing, and multiple VMC's or CNC's from respected and globally recognized manufacturers known for their accuracy in the machine's ability to produce highly precise machined products.

CSR OF SMS GEARS

Social Responsibility is a vital element for the enhanced growth of both the Community in which we operate and the Environment we all depend upon. To be able to maintain a robust operating Company in todays World of widening gaps between rich and poor, a continual crisis of poverty and Climate Change SMS Gears has embarked on many supportive initiatives to develop the Community where we operate.

SMS Gears currently has four (4) Divisions who are responsible for addressing the Major areas of Social Responsibility, which are; Environmental, Ethical, Philanthropic and Economic.

The Company is actively operating a Free of Charge Aged Care facility, where approximately 40 Senior Citizens are provided with complete access to all medical services and have continued to live in a happy and safe environment. Each year we also celebrate all major festivals together.

Through the SMS Foundation we have sponsored the Education of numerous students and have recently sponsored Children from Tamil Nadu to compete in the Para-Olympics. In the last year we have also provided free bore water supply to Government Schools in and around Coimbatore.
